Catholic Aid Association president selected
to lead Minnesota Insurance and
Financial Services Council

ST. PAUL, MINN. -- Catholic Aid Association congratulates our president, Michael F. McGovern, CLU upon his selection as president and chairman of the board of the Minnesota Insurance and Financial Services Council (MIFSC) on Dec. 3, 2009.

Representing 19 public, private and fraternal insurance companies with a combined total of 20,000 Minnesota employees, MIFSC members provide more than $650 billion in benefits to residents of the state. McGovern served previously as the vice chairman of the MIFSC board of directors since the organization’s formation in December of 2007. He succeeds Brian Pietsch of Ameriprise Financial.

McGovern is currently president and board chairman of the Catholic Aid Association, a fraternal benefit society that has conducted business in the upper Midwest for 132 years and serves nearly 74,000 members. McGovern also serves as the vice chair of the Minnesota Insurance Guaranty Association (MIGA) and is a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).

“The Minnesota Insurance and Financial Services Council has taken a leading role in educating legislators about our industry in the past two years,” said McGovern. “Today’s financial climate makes our work all the more necessary.”

CAA and MIFSC President Michael McGovernIn his role as president and chairman of the board, McGovern will preside over the organization’s activities and set the tone for the council’s positions on public policy issues. One of the council’s main functions is to promote a positive climate in which member companies may responsibly serve the retirement and financial needs of Minnesota consumers.

The council was formed in 2007 to represent companies that provide products including life insurance, annuities, retirement and investment products, and long-term care insurance. Member organizations of MIFSC are either based in Minnesota or conduct a significant amount of business in the state.

“MIFSC promotes a positive climate in which member companies may responsibly serve the retirement and financial needs of Minnesota consumers,” said Robyn Rowen, attorney and executive director of MIFSC.

Before joining the Catholic Aid Association, McGovern was managing director with Life Investors Insurance Company, branch manager for Monarch Life, and general manager with Transamerica. McGovern is a past president of the General Agents and Managers Association Twin Cities (GAMA), was an officer with the CLU/ChFC Board of Directors, served on the board of the Minneapolis Association of Life Underwriters, and was active in the Life Underwriter Training Council (LUTC) organization. A past vice chair of the Executive Board of the Insurance Federation of Minnesota (IFM), McGovern has also served on the Legislative Committee for the Minnesota Association of Life Underwriters.
